OUGD401. Context of Practice. Essay Sources and planning.

richard gave us the essay brief to write a 3000 word essay + bibliography about a question of our choice from 5 set questions.

the question i chose to answer is

ive decided that im goin to base my time period in 1970-1990 in New York City.
the topic of art/design i am going to study is Graffiti art (not to be confused with street art).


i went to the library and found a selection of books that i think will help with my research and essay.

OUGD403. Alphabet Soup. Typeface...

having come to a point in my progression that required existing influence/understanding i proceeded to research and evaluate a number or possible typefaces i could use.

i wanted to make sure the typefaces i was considering all had a relation to Dans interests/self so i chose each one to fit a category i had generated from what i knew about Dan.

SERIFS.

Cambria

• simple and polite serifs - curved joins, not over excentuated
• ordered and considered
• like the curves and bowls

Prestige Elite

• certain flare to this font
• mordern and conservative both
• letterforms are leveled and played out well by serifs

Modern No. 20

• more formal but still stylish and inner city
• looks smart 
• nice structure and weights

MINIMAL/SIMPLE

Heiti TC light

• not really very minimal dont know why i chose this
• as far as serif fonts go its still quite calm

Sathu

• relaxed and composed
• like the flat terminals

Corbel

• like the tails. hints at serifs-chiseled additions
• nice big counters and not a heavy weight

CALM/COMFORT.

Devanagari

• not sure why this is calm but i agree that it is
• quite varying weights and curved into serifs add to its comfort

Helvetica

• can be used anywhere really
• known and recognised so not shocking-comforting
• single weight is reassuring

PT Sans

• like the slanted serifs
• like the t

Skia

• think this has real potential-speaks dan all over
• like the semi-childish nature and native american feel 
• would work for overlaps and use of negative space
• looks very natural and complete

AESTHETICALLY INTERESTING.

Bauhaus 93

• every letterform a single line-very smart
• space between joins of bowls and counters adds new dimension
• so simple but effective

Krungthep

• like this a lot has a cyber tech feel to it
• well cool and of the unknown
• like use of curved corners on bowls except 1 sharp corner

Futura

• like equality of this font in terms of form, x-height, counters and weight
• definitely a simple aesthetic but impacting none the less

RETRO.

• reminds me of death of a salesman
• definitely a good retro car font 
• like the constance of the words formed and the italics

• very art deco Manhattan
• like the tallness and skinnyness of the the letterforms
• like how all the bars and crosses are located toward the top of each letterform 

• another retro american font. more 1920s boom era
• reminds me of flappers and window arrangements for high end retailers
• really like this font because of its massivly varying counters, immense curviture, different weights tht are well considered and distinction between straight line and bowl or shoulder.

INTRICATE/CONSIDERED.

• makes sense
• each line forms part of letterform and nothing when on its own like the fact that all lines cooperate to make a letterform

 

• think this font is extremely clever because each letterform follows a basic 3 directional pattern-each line used to form a letter works as it would if the letter were 3d to make box like or folded paper effects

• although a bit over aesthetic, the typeface font has real potential and originality. really like how strokes and crossbars are made from parallel lines following the main stems.
• with black surrounding and picture behind coming through letters typeface font is too pictorial.

NEGATIVE SPACE.

• really like layering of this font-important to consider how small parts of shapes that make up a letter can be layered to create the full letterform.
• some letters are a bit illegible though.

• think this font is a bit over reliant on the black background to be able to see the letters. looks good but isnt really a suitable font.
• pretty standard letterforms and only really interesting because on black background.

• simple and effective format for letters although swapping of black/white boxes a bit random-should show more consideration for pattern.
• once again; without boxes, wouldn't be more than a standard block font.

OVERLAPS.

• i think the overlaps are very simple and dont really offer much to the font.
• purely based on shortening the kerning so really only decreases readability.

Skia Regular

i think skia is a really suitable and interesting typeface for me to base my alphabet around. it portrays simplicity of form, a sense of calm, and aesthetic value. it also holds great potential to be used with the themes of negative space and overlaps. since these are a great number of the main considerations i outlined in relation to Dan, Skia Regular should be a really successful foundation for my designs.
